Showcase - Paul Hunt Diary Entry: 23/10/2005
Ok, so this picture (above) is of the sill and A panel before doing anything with it. The hole in the sill was the only bad bit really. The A panel's rust was curable but I decided to buy a new one as i wanted to seal the joint between A panel and bulkhead and to take it off meant scrapping the piece.
Above is a front view shot with outer sill removed and bulkhead with a hole where the dreaded rust was. A couple of coats of Kurust were applied here. I cut a patch the same size and tack welded it in place then finished it off seam welding it.
Above is an interior shot of the same hole in bulk head, also note the floor and the inner sill on the right where i had to cut out more rust then weld a bit more. The inner sill i lapp welded it from the outside then welded it on the inside too. This has to have some more Kurust applied as it has not turned blue or black.
These are of the scuttle support/wing flange that is a bit rusty. I did not know what to do for the best here. To fix this properly means scrapping the wing which is another 54 quid and it really is not bad enough for that drastic form of action, coupled with the fact I'm a bit skint ;-( so i opted to soften all the sealant with a hot air stripper remove all the crap in the vicinity, then clean it with a wire brush on a die grinder i got it down to brownish metal where i then have applied Kurust again and then filled it with resin filler for bridging gaps and painted it with metal primer. People may say " he will have trouble with that no sooner he has sprayed his car" but i think the paint will cost me about 80 quid to paint the whole car, and with this fix it should last a couple of years until it needs replacing so i think it is more cost effective like this also I need the practice re-spraying anyway :-) - Paul Hunt (More pictures to follow soon! :o) Diary Entry: 05/12/2005 Here are some more photo's that I have done. they are of the scuttle support bracket i mentioned earlier. Notice the rust on the first photo. Like i said i was thinking of taking off the wing to replace it with a new one but that meant to scrap the wing also, so i have cleaned it up the best i could treated it with Kurust then then used filler to cover the holes to stop water penetration. As you can see in the second photo i have primed it (2 times) with anti rust metal primer. The third photo now with a couple of coats of Hammerite Stone chip this dries like rubber, i think that will last a little longer now don't you. Hang in there some more photo's on there way!!!
These are of the part where the headlamp is and goes, if you know what I mean. :-) The one with the headlamp in place is obviously the way it was, not bad really. The others are of the same thing but one is primed and the other is then sprayed with Hammerite stone chip. As with everything under this wing i sand/shot blasted it down to the bare metal. I will then paint it all the same colour as the car when I have the paint that is.
Hi again, here are the before and after of the bulkhead.
Please feel free to add or
take away any of the txt so that it makes sense to anyone
that reads it, I'm not a good writer at the best of times.
I will be putting the suspension thingy back on tomorrow so that I can move the car to have a good clean up. I still need to take of the black paint that comes with the new panels in this case the sil, l then i will prime and stone chip that too. This time i will try to take photo's in stages if you know what I mean. Bye for now m8, hope to meet you some day at a rally with our Mini's.!!!!
